Microwave Oven Magic
Posted on 27. Feb, 2010 by charles in Inventors, People
Fast food depends on microwaves. How did the great invention come about? Surprisingly, it happened by accident. Percy Spencer was an engineer working for the Raytheon Corporation. One day, he was standing near a machine called a magnetron. He had a chocolate bar in his pocket and realized that the chocolate had started to melt.
A few further experiments were done and similar results were gained. They showed that the waves heated up food. There was concern that the waves being emitted could be dangerous. However, it was established that if the waves were harnessed then they could be put to work in a safe way.
Today, we take it for granted that we can have fast food and many other benefits from microwaves. But surprisingly, it took a long time for people to have confidence in them as the magic of the waves scared many people.
So, the next time you make an instant meal think of Percy Spencer who had the insight to develop an accidental discovery into a great technology that helps us all. This is one of the stories that will be published later this year in the Amazing People Series of books – see – http://www.amazingpeopleclub.com/video/video.swf
